Key Stages in the ISO 9001 Revision
The revision of the world’s most widely used quality management standard has reached an important milestone. On 7 August 2026, ISO/TC 176/SC 2 announced that ISO/FDIS 9001 had been approved with overwhelming international support. The committee also stated that the sixth edition of ISO 9001:2026 is scheduled for publication on 16 September 2026.
This development changes the focus of the discussion. The question is no longer whether a new edition will be introduced, but how certified organizations can properly prepare for the ISO 9001:2026 transition – without acting prematurely before the final International Standard and official transition arrangements are available.

What Does FDIS Approval Mean?
FDIS stands for Final Draft International Standard, which is the final draft stage submitted to ISO members for a yes/no approval ballot before publication.
The approval means that the revision has passed the formal approval stage and is now moving through the final process toward publication. ISO/TC 176/SC 2 officially announced that ISO/FDIS 9001 had been approved on 7 August 2026.
However, for organizations, FDIS approval should be understood as a signal to prepare – not as a basis for certification against an edition that has not yet been formally published.

- Prepare a structured ISO 9001:2026 Gap Analysis after publication, rather than making uncontrolled document changes now.
What Organizations Do Not Need to Do Yet
- Do not claim certification or conformity to ISO 9001:2026 before publication and the applicable certification arrangements are available.
- Do not rebuild the entire Quality Management System (QMS) based solely on assumptions about the final text.
- Do not assume a specific transition period as an official requirement before the transition framework is confirmed.
- Do not create unnecessary additional procedures simply to appear “ready.”
- Do not allow ISO 9001 transition preparation to reduce the focus on the effectiveness of the currently applicable ISO 9001:2015 system.

Therefore, organizations that already hold ISO 9001 certification do not need to rebuild their QMS from scratch. The initial focus should be on understanding the changes, evaluating the existing system, and preparing for the ISO 9001:2026 transition in a structured manner.
