Driving Sustainable Mining Performance Through Data, Verification, and Certification

Jakarta, September 10, 2026 | CBQA Global participated as a speaker and moderator at Mining Sustainability Forum 2026, part of the Indonesia Energy & Engineering (IEE) Series, held at the GPN Stage, Jakarta International Expo (JIEXPO) Kemayoran, Jakarta.

Under the theme “Accelerating Performance and Sustainable Value Creation,” the forum brought together industry leaders, professionals, and practitioners to discuss how the mining sector can improve operational performance while strengthening sustainability and creating long-term value.

With the central question, “Can Mining Performance and Sustainability Move Forward Together?”, the forum highlighted that sustainability is no longer only about compliance and reporting. Sustainability is increasingly becoming part of operational performance, risk management, business resilience, and long-term value creation.

CBQA Global Discusses Sustainability Data, Verification & Validation, and Certification

During the forum, William CD Manurung, Head of Sustainability, CBQA Global, participated as a speaker and presented:

Building Credible Performance: Sustainability Data, Verification, and Certification Across Decarbonization, Biodiversity, and Mine Closure

The session explored how sustainability data, verification, and certification can help organizations build more credible sustainability performance.

One of the key messages was that decarbonization, biodiversity, and mine closure performance require reliable data, supported by credible verification and certification processes.

This approach encourages companies to move from unverified claims to independently verified data, from self-reported compliance to third-party verification, and from fragmented disclosure to structured and verifiable reporting.

Sustainability, therefore, is not only about setting corporate targets. It is also about ensuring that progress can be measured, demonstrated, and trusted by stakeholders.

Three Key Sustainability Focus Areas in the Mining Industry

1. Decarbonization

Mining decarbonization has become an important agenda for the mining industry. Various approaches can be implemented, including electrification, renewable energy, process innovation, fleet optimization, and logistics optimization.

However, emissions reduction targets need to be supported by reliable data. Companies need a clear baseline, consistent measurement processes, and credible evidence to demonstrate their emissions performance.

Therefore, the journey toward decarbonization needs to move from commitment toward measurement and verification.

2. Biodiversity

Sustainable mining is also closely connected to biodiversity management and environmental restoration.

Effective biodiversity management requires a measurable approach, starting from baseline assessment, monitoring, rehabilitation, and evaluation of restoration outcomes.

The forum materials highlighted an example of environmental restoration in Indonesia. MIND ID Group reported that more than 8,000 hectares of post-mining land had been reclaimed and approximately 37,700 hectares of watershed areas had been rehabilitated cumulatively through 2025.

This demonstrates how environmental recovery can become an important component of measurable sustainability performance.

3. Mine Closure

Mine closure is another important component of sustainable mining.

Mine closure should not be viewed only as an obligation at the end of mining operations. Mine closure planning needs to be integrated into the mine life cycle, allowing post-mining land to be prepared for future environmental, social, and economic benefits.

One example discussed during the forum was the use of reclaimed post-mining land for renewable energy development. PT Bukit Asam has allocated more than 250 hectares of reclaimed post-mining land for solar power development, with an existing solar portfolio of 1.2 MWp.

This approach demonstrates that mine closure can be viewed not only as a regulatory obligation, but also as part of long-term value creation.

Building Credible Sustainability Performance

These three areas share one fundamental requirement: credible data and evidence.

Companies may have sustainability targets and publish a sustainability report, but stakeholders need confidence that the information is supported by reliable and accountable data.

For this reason, verification and certification play an important role in building trust in sustainability information and performance.

As highlighted during the CBQA Global session:

“Sustainability that is measured, verified, and certified is sustainability that lasts.”

This principle emphasizes the importance of transforming sustainability commitments into measurable and verifiable performance.

The Role of CBQA Global in Sustainable Mining

As an independent certification, verification, and validation body, CBQA Global supports organizations in building confidence in their management systems, sustainability performance, and related information.

For the mining, energy, and agribusiness sectors, CBQA Global’s capabilities include:

These capabilities are supported by experience across multiple schemes, including ISO 14064, ISCC, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001, as well as an understanding of Indonesia’s mineral and coal regulations.

Through these services, CBQA Global is committed to helping organizations build credible data, verified performance, and sustainable value.

Collaboration for the Future of Sustainable Mining

The transformation toward sustainable mining requires collaboration among multiple stakeholders.

Mining companies, government institutions, technology providers, contractors, sustainability practitioners, experts, certification bodies, verification bodies, and other stakeholders all have important roles to play.

No single organization has all the answers to the challenges of sustainability.

Therefore, forums such as Mining Sustainability Forum 2026 provide an important platform for bringing together different perspectives, experiences, technologies, and approaches.

For CBQA Global, the forum provided an opportunity to contribute to discussions on how data, technology, standards, measurement, verification, and certification can support the transformation of the mining industry.

Toward Measurable and Credible Sustainable Mining

The future of sustainable mining will not be determined only by sustainability commitments. It will also depend on the ability of companies to measure, verify, and demonstrate their performance.

Decarbonization requires credible emissions data. Biodiversity requires measurable baselines and monitoring. Mine closure requires long-term planning that can create value after mining activities end.

Ultimately, the more important question is not only:

“Are we sustainable?”

But:

“Are we becoming better?”

Are companies becoming more efficient?

Are risks being managed more effectively?

Are environmental and social impacts being reduced?

Can sustainability performance be demonstrated?

Mining Sustainability Forum 2026 reinforced the importance of moving beyond commitment and reporting toward measurable performance and real value.

The future of mining is not only about becoming cleaner, but also becoming more regenerative and provable. Sustainability that is measured, verified, and certified has a stronger foundation for creating long-term impact.
