SPEI (Indonesia Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certification) is a mechanism used to verify Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction activities in a credible, measurable, and transparent manner. SPEI plays an important role in supporting SRN PPI, the Indonesia Carbon Exchange, and the achievement of Indonesia NDC targets through a verification process that ensures emission reductions are real, measurable, and accountable.

As Indonesia Carbon Trading continues to develop and the demand for reliable environmental data increases, organizations are expected to demonstrate climate mitigation results that can be independently verified. In this context, SPEI has become an important instrument in supporting decarbonization efforts and the transition toward a low-carbon economy.

What Is Indonesia Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certification (SPEI)?

SPEI is a certification scheme used to quantify, validate, and verify climate change mitigation activities that result in Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction or enhanced carbon removals.

Through a structured verification process, SPEI ensures that reported emission reductions are real, measurable, monitored, and transparently reported. The implementation of SPEI is aligned with applicable national regulations and supported by the principles of ISO 14064-2 for the quantification, monitoring, and reporting of emission reduction projects.

Why Is SPEI Important?

Growing expectations for environmental transparency mean that organizations are no longer expected only to reduce emissions but also to demonstrate credible results.

SPEI helps strengthen the credibility of environmental data, supports Sustainability Reporting, contributes to decarbonization goals, and provides confidence to regulators, investors, and stakeholders that reported emission reductions have been independently verified.

Who Can Participate in the SPEI Scheme?

The SPEI scheme can be applied by business entities, climate change mitigation project owners, and organizations implementing Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction initiatives.

The scheme is relevant for organizations across various sectors seeking recognition for verified emission reduction achievements and participation in the Indonesia Carbon Trading ecosystem.

Scope of Indonesia Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certification

SPEI covers a wide range of strategic sectors, including energy, waste management, industrial processes and product use, agriculture, and forestry, all of which contribute to Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction efforts.

Verification can also be conducted for various greenhouse gases, including CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, HFCs, PFCs, and SF₆, which are important components of organizational greenhouse gas inventories.

Integrity Principles in SPEI

To maintain the credibility and quality of verification results, SPEI applies the TACCC principles: Transparent, Accurate, Consistent, Comprehensive, and Comparable.

These principles are supported by the MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) approach, which helps ensure that emissions data and emission reduction results are reliable, traceable, and accountable.

How Does SPEI Support Indonesia Carbon Trading?

Indonesia Carbon Trading requires emissions and emission reduction data that are accurate, transparent, and independently verified.

Through the SPEI process, organizations can obtain a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate (SPE-GRK), which is registered in the National Registry System for Climate Change Control (SRN PPI). Each SPE-GRK represents verified emission reductions or enhanced removals that comply with applicable requirements.

The existence of SPE-GRK serves as an important foundation for the Indonesia Carbon Exchange by providing assurance that traded carbon units originate from credible and verified emission reduction activities.

The Role of SPEI in Supporting Indonesia NDC Targets

Indonesia has established greenhouse gas emission reduction targets through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) as part of its commitment to the Paris Agreement.

Achieving these targets requires a transparent reporting and verification system. Through SPEI, Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction results can be quantified, verified, and reported consistently, contributing to the achievement of Indonesia NDC targets in a measurable and accountable manner.

International Collaboration Supporting SPEI

To strengthen integrity and international recognition, Indonesia has established various collaborations through Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) with international programs and institutions.

These collaborations help expand international carbon trading opportunities, strengthen confidence in Indonesia’s Carbon Certification mechanisms, and support the development of a more credible carbon market.
