A new chapter for Indonesia’s carbon market begins with the launch of the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK), strengthening the infrastructure for transparent, accountable, and credible carbon trading.

Jakarta, 9 July 2026 – Indonesia has officially entered a new phase in the development of its carbon market ecosystem with the launch of the Carbon Unit Registry System (Sistem Registri Unit Karbon/SRUK).

The launch marks an important step in strengthening Indonesia’s national carbon market infrastructure and supporting the country’s climate commitments.

Carbon trading has been projected as a new engine for climate action financing and green investment in Indonesia. According to the Ministry of Environment, the potential value of Indonesia’s carbon market could reach thousands of trillions of rupiah, reflecting the significant economic opportunities that may emerge from the country’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Building a More Integrated Carbon Market Ecosystem

SRUK is designed to strengthen the registration and management of carbon units within Indonesia’s national carbon market ecosystem.

According to the Ministry of Environment, six key sectors are involved in Indonesia’s carbon trading ecosystem: forestry, energy, industry, agriculture, marine and fisheries, and environment. These sectors are expected to be integrated into SRUK.

The system also reflects Indonesia’s commitment to the transparency framework under the Paris Agreement by strengthening accountability for climate actions and the resources mobilized to support national climate change mitigation efforts.

The official launch of SRUK was held under the theme “Strengthening Indonesia’s Carbon Market Ecosystem” and brought together government institutions, financial market authorities, businesses, potential carbon buyers, international carbon standards and registries, as well as Validation and Verification Bodies.

This multi-stakeholder involvement reflects a critical reality: a credible carbon market requires more than a trading platform. It depends on a trusted ecosystem capable of maintaining the integrity, traceability, and accountability of carbon units.

From Climate Action to Credible Carbon Units

As Indonesia’s carbon market infrastructure continues to evolve, the quality and credibility of climate actions will become increasingly important.

For businesses and project proponents, participating in the carbon ecosystem is not simply about making emission reduction claims. Climate actions must be supported by reliable data, appropriate methodologies, transparent reporting, and independent assessment.

This is where validation and verification become essential components of the carbon ecosystem.

Validation assesses whether a proposed climate action or mitigation activity has been designed in accordance with applicable requirements and methodologies. Verification, meanwhile, provides an independent assessment of reported results and the emission reductions or removals achieved.

Together, these processes help strengthen confidence that climate claims are supported by credible evidence and can withstand independent scrutiny.

Why the Launch of SRUK Matters for Businesses

The launch of SRUK signals that Indonesia’s carbon ecosystem is becoming increasingly structured and interconnected.

For organizations developing mitigation activities, sustainability initiatives, or carbon projects, this creates a strategic moment to strengthen internal readiness.

Businesses should begin asking:

  • Are our climate actions supported by measurable data?
  • Are our methodologies and documentation ready for independent assessment?
  • Can our emission reduction claims be demonstrated and verified?
  • Are we prepared to participate in an increasingly transparent carbon ecosystem?

As carbon markets continue to develop, organizations that build strong foundations in data, documentation, governance, and verification readiness will be better positioned to navigate the evolving landscape.

Strengthening Carbon Integrity Through Independent Validation and Verification

The launch of SRUK is more than the introduction of a new system. It represents a step towards strengthening the integrity of Indonesia’s carbon market ecosystem.

CBQA Global supports this journey as a Validation and Verification Body for SPEI, helping organizations strengthen the credibility and accountability of their climate actions through independent validation and verification.

Your Climate Action Has Begun. Now, Can Its Impact Be Proven?

As Indonesia’s carbon ecosystem evolves, credible climate action will depend not only on what organizations claim to achieve, but also on their ability to demonstrate it through reliable data, transparent documentation, and independent assessment.

Validate the Action. Verify the Impact.
